This happened in upstate NY, around September. I was living with someone who called the cops on me when we got into a heated argument, and told them that I was suicidal. The cops came and took me to the hospital, despite me saying I did not want to go. They told me it was just procedure. I was not allowed to leave the hospital for 6 hours where I refused any medication and repeated that I did not give consent to be there. I left with the diagnosis that I was "stressed" and "depressed". No shit. I got a bill for the emergency room and then the doctor's stupid diagnosis. Do I have to pay it? What are my rights?
EDIT: Thank you for the responses everyone. I guess it looks like I'll just have to pay. I do have insurance, am not suicidal (as I said, a heated argument), and was not intoxicated/under the influence/disoriented. I've had discussions with the hospital about my situation, but they were not helpful and told me the bill will just go to collections - which is why I posted here. I didn't provide them with an ID or a SSN but they do have my address and phone number.
I was freaking out when it happened - I had a cousin a few years ago that was nabbed from the street by police, coming from a job interview, because her ex had called and said she was suicidal. She was then put on drugs at the hospital and lost the ability to walk and talk (still has visible effects now). I did refuse any medication because of that and answered all questions as calmly as possible. She was charged for a week's stay and experienced a lot of mental trauma.
I think the healthcare system in America is dangerous and needs to be reformed, but I don't even know how the law works in those situations.
